The word etiquette refers to a group of rules and codes to abide by. That been said, travel etiquettes are rules, guidelines and customs that controls the way a person should behave when traveling. It is important to remember some of these travel etiquettes when travelling abroad.
Travel etiquette continually raises questions. Should you leave your hotel room messy? Who uses the armrest on the plane? What are the appropriate behaviors for children in a plane? Do you say hi to all the strangers in your new destination?
Let Raymart Aviation guide you through the sometimes confusing, sometimes amazing maze of travel etiquette.
Learning more about the place you are visiting will help you a lot in understanding them or why certain codes or customs are applied.
DON’T CRITISIZE THE FOOD
Just like the saying , “if you have nothing nice to say, then don’t say anything”. If the food looks, feels or tastes strange, maintain a polite countenance..
CAREFUL WITH YOUR GESTURES
Body language is a great way to communicate with other people. However, you have to understand that gestures can be interpreted in different ways.
Taking a moment to reflect is a good idea too. You can meditate on the conversation and think of polite words to give the right answer or ask something correctly.
ARE YOU TO TIP OR NOT?
Tipping is a real culture in some parts of the world, and is considered quite offensive in others. In Japan, for example, don’t ever leave a tip after your meal. While it’s normal practice in places like the United States, it isn’t in most Asian regions.
KNOW WHEN/WHERE YOU EAT AND WHEN/WHERE NOT TO EAT
Adjust to local behavior when you are visiting a new place. In Italy, you shouldn’t drink or eat near churches, historic mementos and public constructions.
In some Italian cities and towns, it’s against the law. You should also not eat in a place of worship, and avoid drinking from your water bottle while inside.
PUBLIC DISPLAY OF AFFECTION SHOULD BE TONED DOWN IN CERTAIN COUNTRIES
Travel customs and rules in different cultures varies. You should avoid public displays of affection mostly in Islamic states. Egypt for instance. Whether or not you’re with a loved one on holiday to Egypt, don’t offend others by getting overly romantic or holding hands in public places.
ALWAYS BE RESPECTFUL
When it comes to international travel rules and behaviors, there is quite a lot to be mindful of. While sight seeing places like a Hindu or Buddhist temple, take your shoes off before entering such sacred places.
Don’t take pictures unless you’ve asked permission. Also refrain from having wandering hands and touching sacred items. Monks and pilgrims will also only walk around Buddhist monuments in a clockwise pattern. Follow their lead.
Travel etiquette is different from place to place. However, you can always follow rules.
It is highly advised for you to learn more about the travel etiquette applied in your travel destination before you travel. Hence, you know what to do or what not to do when you arrive.
Even if you don’t really have time to learn all the travel etiquette of the place you’re traveling to, always stick to respectful manners.
