ALWAYS USE SWAHILI TIME

In Swahili culture, time is counted from dawn to sunset rather than from midnight to midnight. This means that it is 7 a.m. Western time is 1 a.m. Swahili time, and 7 p.m. Western time is 1 a.m. Swahili time.

Quite confusing, right?

There is a workaround for this.Imagine drawing a straight line across a clock face to decode this code.Three turns into nine, and four turns into 10.It’s best to specify the time of day you would want to meet when scheduling meetings: morning, afternoon, evening, or night.That way, even if your numbers are off, you’re more likely to connect.That is one of the things to be aware of before visiting Zanzibar.

GREETINGS MATTER

Always say hello if you’re in Zanzibar. Swahili is a simple language to learn, and the learning curve is short. Learning the fundamentals will get you a long way. Don’t assume that people’s persistent attention on the street is an attempt to sell you anything or trick you into taking a tour. Although this does occur, it is also an important part of the local culture to say hello.

TWO RAINY SEASONS

There are two rainy seasons in Zanzibar. Every year, long rains and short rains alternate.The long rainy season in Zanzibar lasts from March through May. It is not a good idea to plan a trip around this time if you want to go on a beach vacation.The islands are subjected to some truly epic monsoons, which will wreak havoc on your beach time.The short rains usually fall between November and December, but they aren’t as heavy.They usually appear in brief, torrential spurts, then fade away to reveal blue skies.

Across Zanzibar, and many parts of mainland Tanzania, breakfast options are egg white. The yolks are never a sunny yellow. They don’t taste different. Chickens in Zanzibar feed on a grain that makes them produce monochrome eggs.

When you first arrive in Stone Town, it can appear eerie at night. The darkly illuminated maze of small alleyways and back alleys isn’t exactly conducive to mindless exploration. But don’t allow the eerie atmosphere after dark to keep you cooped up in your room.

In the evenings, Stone Town comes alive with children playing, couples strolling, and people feasting everywhere.Forodhani Gardens, a central park turned night market, is bustling with locals and tourists trying the dozen of fresh food stalls.

APPLY COMMON SENSE ALWAYS

Another important thing to know before visiting Zanzibar is that it is legal to drink and to wear beach clothing in the appropriate places. There are times and locations, however, when neither is suitable. It’s advisable to stay away from revealing apparel and intoxicated slurring in Stone Town. There are a few bars in Stone Town, and you can drink at tourist and expat restaurants as well as some of the more upscale hotels in town and on the coast; however, keep in mind that the waiter serving you is unlikely to be a drinker, so be patient if their wine-bottle opening isn’t graceful.
